Saxen has gotten a new home. The town is called Lira, and it is located in the northern region of Uganda. This is where Eivind is going to be living for the next six months. It feels strange, but really, I could have found much worse places to live than this one. After spending four days in Kampala, the noisy, way-to-crowded capital of Uganda, it felt really good to come to Lira and find that it is actually a very peaceful little town. Outside our house, you can rarely hear anything but the wind blowing, and the occasional moo from the cows that live here. Oh, by the way, we have cows in our backyard ;)
I live with a host family, consisting of Michael, his wife Immaculate and a girl named Winnie (she works with Focus (Focus is like the Norwegian Laget) in Lira and is not related to Michael and Immaculate). Michael works as a youth pastor in Victory Outreach Church (I remembered the name of it today), in addition to being involved in Focus' work in Lira. Immaculate is a stay-at-home mom and 7 months pregnant. This means that in december, I will be the uncle of a little african girl. I'm excited:)
So, we arrived in Lira on monday. Since then, we have spent most of the time getting familiar with the town and visiting various places that will be relevant for us the next six months. We have been to Michael's church, various "super"markets in town, UTC (a university that we are probable going to work with quite a lot) and, last, but not least, Mzungu Joint (in english; white guy-cafe). Yesterday evening we attended Fellowship, which is one of the different kinds of meetings hosted by Focus. We are going to attend many of these meetings, so it was good to find ourselves having a great time. The worship, which was in the local language and consisted mostly og shouting, will probably take some getting used to, but we'll figure it out...
After Fellowship, we went home for tea, and supper. If there is only one thing that I really like here in Lira, it is definitely the evenings. We are home at around 7 o'clock mostly every nigh, because by that time the sun has gone down and it is completely dark outside. But, after a little while the moon rises, and if there is no clouds in the sky (which there rarely is), then the town of Lira is bathing in moon- and starlight. Life is good!!
Throughout this blog post, I have tried to give an impression of how I am doing in Lira. If you have yet to catch the mood of the post, I can assure you, dear reader, that I am doing very good. Håkon and I are excited about what is yet to come, and we hope that you will continue to follow us.
